Editorial summary
This summary is editorial and is not part of the clinical review. Ratings above are unchanged.
What energy drinks are
Energy drinks are sweetened or artificially sweetened soft drinks with added caffeine, often combined with taurine, B vitamins, guarana, ginseng or other botanical ingredients. A single can can contain as much caffeine as one or more cups of coffee, and larger cans or energy shots can contain more. Many are also high in sugar.
Why the rating is cautious
The FDA's general benchmark for healthy adults is up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day, an amount it says is not generally associated with negative effects, and it notes that people differ in how sensitive they are and how quickly they break caffeine down. That figure does not account for a medical condition. Sugary energy drinks also add a large amount of added sugar: the FDA's Daily Value for added sugars is 50 grams a day on a 2,000-calorie diet. These two things, concentrated caffeine and sugar in a highly processed drink, are the basis for our rating of Limit for inflammatory bowel disease, Hashimoto's, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and lupus.
Why it is Avoid in a Graves' flare
Graves' disease makes the thyroid overactive, which can already cause a fast heart rate, palpitations, anxiety, shakiness and trouble sleeping. Caffeine can add to those same symptoms, which is why our rating is Avoid during a flare and Limit in remission. Some medicines used for overactive thyroid also affect heart rate, so ask your care team what amount of caffeine, if any, suits you.
Digestion and sleep
Some people with inflammatory bowel disease find that caffeine or carbonated, sugary drinks make cramping or loose stools worse, which a food diary can confirm. Caffeine late in the day can disrupt sleep, and poor sleep is a common complaint in autoimmune conditions.
Reading a label
Look for the caffeine content, usually listed per can or per serving, and count it together with coffee, tea, soft drinks and supplements. Guarana is another source of caffeine. Check the added sugars line, and remember that sugar-free versions still contain the same caffeine. Energy shots are small but concentrated.
In short
In short, energy drinks combine concentrated caffeine with, often, a lot of sugar, which is why they are rated Limit for most conditions and Avoid during a Graves' flare. Count all your caffeine sources together.
