Editorial summary

This summary is editorial and is general information, not a religious ruling. The status above is unchanged.

What it is

Pepperoni is a spiced, cured and dried sausage, sliced thin and used mostly as a pizza topping, in sandwiches and in snack packs. This entry also covers salami and chorizo, which are listed as aliases because they are similar cured sausages. Our rating notes that pepperoni is typically pork-based, which is why it is rated haram unless a product is certified halal.

Why it is rated haram

Pork and anything made from it are prohibited in Islam. Because it is typically made with pork, a pepperoni, salami or chorizo with no halal certificate should be assumed to contain it. Even when a product is made only from beef, chicken or turkey, the animal also has to be slaughtered according to Islamic rules for the meat to be halal, and an ordinary label does not say how the animal was slaughtered. The casing can also be a question: sausage casings can be made from animal intestines or collagen, and the source animal is not always stated.

Halal pepperoni

Halal-certified beef, chicken and turkey pepperoni and salami are made and sold, especially in shops that serve Muslim communities, and some pizza chains use them in some countries. The word beef or turkey on the front of a pack is not enough on its own, because the meat may still not be from a halal-slaughtered animal and the product may share equipment with pork. Look for a recognized halal certificate on the package, or ask the restaurant which supplier it uses and whether the supplier is certified.

At restaurants

Pizza restaurants that offer a halal pepperoni sometimes cook it in the same ovens and with the same utensils as pork toppings. Scholars differ on how strictly shared equipment must be avoided, so if that matters to you, ask how the kitchen keeps halal toppings separate.

In short

In short, pepperoni is usually made from pork and is haram unless the product is certified halal. Beef or turkey on the label does not settle it, so a recognized certificate, or a restaurant's certified supplier, is what decides it.

Also listed on labels as

pepperoni can appear on an ingredient list as salami, chorizo.

What to do when a product lists it

A product that lists this ingredient is not permissible for those who follow this rating, so look for an alternative made without it. Some ingredients have halal-certified or plant-based versions, and a recognized halal certificate is the way to confirm that a particular product uses one. Recipes change and differ between countries, so check the package in your hands.
