Which food ingredients are halal, doubtful or haram?
Many everyday ingredients, such as gelatin, enzymes, glycerin and flavors, can come from animal, plant or synthetic sources, so their status can depend on how they were made. Each guide below explains why an ingredient is rated halal, doubtful (mushbooh) or haram.

Haram (not permissible)
- Is alcohol halal?Intoxicating alcohol is prohibited in Islam.
- Is beer halal?Alcoholic fermented beverage. Haram.
- Is carmine halal?Red dye extracted from cochineal insects. Haram — insects are impermissible.
- Is L-cysteine halal?Amino acid often sourced from human hair or poultry feathers. Haram unless certified plant/microbial origin.
- Is pork halal?Derived from pig. Strictly forbidden in Islam.
- Is rennet halal?Animal rennet from non-halal slaughtered animals is haram. Microbial or plant rennet is halal.
- Is shellac halal?Resin secreted by lac insects, used as a coating. Haram.
- Is vanilla extract halal?Traditional vanilla extract is alcohol-based. Haram unless certified alcohol-free.
- Is wine halal?Fermented alcoholic beverage. Haram.
Doubtful (mushbooh)
- Is Beetroot Red halal?Dye extracted from beet/beet juice; status depends on extracting chemicals/solvents.
- Is cheese halal?Cheese may use animal rennet from non-halal slaughter. Verify rennet source.
- Is enzymes halal?Enzymes may be derived from animals, plants, or microbes. Animal-sourced (porcine lipase especially) is haram.
- Is gelatin halal?May be derived from pork or non-halal animal sources. Halal only if certified bovine/fish.
- Is glycerol halal?May be animal or plant/synthetic derived. Plant-derived is halal; animal-derived is doubtful.
- Is lecithin halal?Usually plant-based (soy/sunflower) — halal. Egg lecithin may be haram if from non-halal sources. Verify source.
- Is magnesium stearate halal?Used as anti-caking agent. Stearic acid source may be animal.
- Is mono and diglycerides halal?Derived from fats — source may be plant or animal. Seek certified halal.
- Is natural flavors halal?Source unspecified. May contain animal-derived compounds including pork or alcohol-extracted flavours.
- Is Polysorbate 20 halal?Fatty-acid derivative emulsifier; Halal if 100% plant fat, haram if pork fat.
- Is soy sauce halal?Some soy sauces contain alcohol from fermentation. Verify — halal-certified versions exist.
- Is vitamin D3 halal?Usually from lanolin (sheep wool fat) or fish. May be from porcine source. Verify — plant-based D3 (lichen) is halal.
- Is whey halal?Byproduct of cheese-making. If cheese used animal rennet, whey status is debated. Seek certified halal.
